Rachmaninov, son compositeur de prédilection, figure au centre de son programme. Mais c’est Liadov, autre compositeur russe, élève de Rimski-Korsakov, qui ouvre le récital : ses Préludes sont des joyaux musicaux où il saisit des impressions fugitives au moyen d’une écriture colorée et d’un soin extrême. Les célèbres Variations Corelli de Rachmaninov sont l’occasion pour ce-dernier de démontrer la puissance de son imagination : d’un thème simple, il élabore mille vagabondages, grâcieux, contemplatifs, vifs, ou d’un lyrisme profond. Enfin, sa Première Sonate, rarement interprétée, est un œuvre colossale, incandescente, agitée et lumineuse.

The famous Variations on a Theme of Corelli were an opportunity for Rachmaninov to demonstrate the power of his imagination: with a simple theme, he invents a profusion of meanderings that vary from the gracious, contemplative, playful, ferocious and deeply lyrical. Lastly, his First Sonata, which is rarely performed, is a colossal piece, incandescent, agitated and luminous.
